Horace Shires

Horace W. "Bear" Shires, age 78, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007 at Willow Ridge Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mr. Shires was born on October 16, 1928 to the late John Hoke Shires and Ida Mae Hughes Shires. He grew up in the Ellenboro area. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had worked for Stonecutter Mill for over 35 years. He was a member of Tanners Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Betty Shires of the home; two sons Larry Shires of Spindale, NC, and Boyce Shires of Gastonia, NC; one daughter, Penny Melton of Shelby, NC; step-son Ted Wright of Ellenboro, NC, and step-daughter Joan Conner of Inman, SC. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
